Microsoft Xbox 360 & Sony PS3 Want Your TV
Xbox 360 promises great looking games and also a tight integration with Windows Media Center. PS3 promises stellar looking games with more muscle than the Xbox 360. Promises mean dollars.
Sony is clearly going after the gaming market - almost making fun of the Xbox 360's jack of all trades attitude. Sony only talked games - but there are rumors that there will be an iTunes integration but nothing for us TV hounds. Both game machines will support HIGH DEF games and HD output. I don't know if I really need to play a game at 1080i - but I will probably wonder why I never did before.
Right now - as far as TV goes - Microsoft is clearly the best choice due to the media center integration. I'm surprised there is no Tuner on the Xbox 360, but this is positioned as an extender not a full media center PC, but it's odd that they stopped short on just going for it.
Right now though really - you have 2 game machines, with big video cards, lots of ram, 20gb of storage a piece and little else but hype. It would be great if both machines helped to push some video around the house or maybe even games around the house a bit - but who knows what will really happen after launch.
