Vudu Update 1.3.0 Released, Vudu XL Begins Shipping
Vudu has released their version 1.3.0 software update with a whole new load of features for the set-top box. First off, Vudu now provides you with two ways to remove movies or TV shows from your box-archiving and deletion. Archiving allows you to transfer owned titles to the secure Vudu Vault which frees spaces for additional purchases. Archived titles can be found under the My Movies heading and can be redownloaded at any time for free. Deletion permanently removed titles from your Vudu meaning you'll have to pay again next time you want to watch the same title.

IR remote compatibility allows you to use select programmable remotes to operate you Vudu, but will cost you $39 as this function requires the purchase of an IR receiver kit. Two new sort options, Most Watched and Top Picks, are new categories under My Movies that sort titles according to their popularity with Vudu users and the Vudu editorial team respectively. The Most Watched category is ranked numerically from 1-100.
The Vudu box is now also offering some new TV search features that allow you to move from one episode of a TV series to the next without having to go back to the overall season heading. Simple fix, but it greatly improves the usability of the Vudu interface.
It's been a busy year for Vudu so far. The company released their version 1.2 software update only a month ago which brought a whole new library of HD titles to users plus an improved interface. They also debuted the Vudu XL at CES 2008 back in early January and just announced the pricey $999 box will be shipping immediately. Near the end of January they also cut the price of the set-top box from $399 to $295, likely in response to the announcement of Apple TV's Take 2.
Despite the majors improvements to the Vudu box, many consumers are still unsure of what media streamer is the best. Vudu is definitely not the company with the most "mindshare" out there as they face competition from the likes of Apple and the Xbox 360. If you're one of these consumers, check out Gizmodo's comparison of the Vudu box, Xbox 360 and Apple TV. It's well worth a look.
