2Wire MediaPoint STB: Blockbuster Finally Release Set-Top Box
We've been waiting for Blockbuster's set-top box and it's finally here. Announced today, Blockbuster's 2Wire-manufactured MediaPoint STB is freely available for a limited time with the advance purchase of 25 movies, TV shows, foreign or classic films from Blockbuster On Demand (previously MovieLink). The package is priced at $99 and subsequent rentals will set you back $1.99.
The MediaPoint player doesn't require a Blockbuster subscription, supports HD via HDMI, and has both WiFi and Ethernet connections. It's a great move by Blockbuster, but competitor Netflix is way ahead. The company, with their Roku-branded media player, already has relationships with five set-top box manufacturers, and can stream on-demand content to select LG and Samsung Blu-ray players. We can't imagine Blockbuster will be able to close the gap anytime soon, if at all.
