Oppo BDP-83: Yet Another 'Universal' Blu-ray Player
When Denon's DVD-A1UDCI Blu-ray player launches next February with the tag "universal" attached to the product name it'll be no surprise. After all, Denon produces premium products. But when a value brand like Oppo Digital does the same thing, it's a pure marketing play. That will be the case when the company launches the Oppo BDP-83 "universal" Blu-ray player December 20. It'll playback BD-Live Blu-ray in 1080p/24Hz, DVD video, DVD-Audio, and SACD so I suppose it does have universal functions. But I sure hope we don't see universal tagged to every Blu-ray player on the market next year.
Anyway, it'll launch in limited quantities between December 20 and January 16, 2009 priced between $499 and $599. I'm not sure what the official release date will be, but even with 1 GB of internal memory, USB and ethernet connections in addition to the features above, the BDP-83 doesn't exactly scream value to me.

have to agree with other commenter.
Oppo's price point and component capability outmatch much higher priced units such as Denon's.
Have bought a Oppo 980H for SACD playback, but the video playback and upscaling is exceptional.
The 980H actually does DSD via hdmi at $180.00, nobody comes close. At one point you could by a PS3 that does everything the Oppo Blu-ray player will do at $500.00 but PS3 has dropped SACD playback and it never did DSD playback for SACD.
the Denon Blu-ray player that does DSD for SACD playback is listed $4,200.00. The Oppo is going to be a steal and will sound better than a PS3 (I have a SACD capable PS3, bass response is a little off).
Best buy out there are the Oppo units period

You're obviously not a golfer.
"...the BDP-83 doesn't exactly scream value to me."
Sorry, but with ABT VRS DVD upscale solution, great load times, top-notch audio support across the board, great customer service from the California-based company, it screams nothing but value to me.
