Amazon offering free $100 gift card with Xbox 360 Arcade purchase today. So is Walmart.

xbox360arcade1.jpgToday Amazon is boasting some super hot pre-Black Friday deals that include a $199.98 Xbox 360 Arcade that includes a $100 promo code for the free purchase of other items. The first run is already 100% claimed for this morning, but it'll be on again at 12 PM PST. You'll have to be on the ball though as I expect the 360s will sell out in a matter of minutes. Other Gold Box deals today include a 32-inch Sony Bravia HDTV for $399.99.

Walmart will also be offering the same deal in retail stores across the United States, though there will only be 10 units available per outlet.

Black Friday deal rumor: $49 Blu-ray players

bluray_machines.jpgWill we see $49 Blu-ray players this Black Friday? Research firm NPD's director of industry analysis, Ross Rubin, thinks it's possible. Given the huge uptake in Blu-ray sales this year as prices continue to fall, he thinks if anything we'll definitely see a ton of $99 deals. And as opposed to last year, 2009's deals won't be from second-tier brands like Magnavox and Sylvania, but first-tier brands that ship web-connected models. What do you think? We'll we see a $49 Blu-ray player this Black Friday?

Huge Best Buy HDTV deals this week!

best-buy-screenshot.jpgAlthough the economy is arguably beginning to recover, HDTV retailers won't recover for some time. And many of us just don't have the extra cash around to purchase a new HDTV. Sooner or later, retailers like Best Buy have to cut their losses and clear inventory. Hence the giant savings revealed in today's Best Buy Sunday circular on big-screens sized above 39-inches. In fact, a few 46- and 55-inch Samsung HDTVs have $1100 lopped off the price tag. There's also a few HDTV, Blu-ray and home theater packages featuring big savings as well. Check out HD GURU or the Best Buy flyer for all of the details.

Playstation 3 price cut to $299

kmart-ps3.jpgRumors of an upcoming Playstation 3 price cut have been flying around for awhile, despite repeated denials from Sony, maker of the game console. But today it appears that "the rumors are reality". A Kmart.com promotion has the PS3 listed for $299 (80 GB), a $100 price cut, a drop meant to prepare us for a "new" PS3--presumably the PS3 Slim. Later today there is a Sony press event in New York during which I'm expecting we'll hear more details. Stay tuned.

Steals and deals: Buy a Mitsubishi HDTV and get a free Vudu movie box

vudu-logo.pngMitsubishi is offering a free VUDU box with the purchase of its HDTVs from July 16 to August 10. The VUDU box streams movies straight to your HDTV in 1080p and probably offers the highest quality streaming content around right now. It regularly costs $149 plus you'll get a $50 credit for movie purchases as well.

Mitsubishi is apparently looking to offer something a little different that the traditional HDTV/Blu-ray pair promos that most companies are offering. Plus Mitsubishi doesn't offer streaming services directly through its HDTVs yet, so by offering a VUDU box the company gets around this problem. The company says this is only a promotion and it doesn't have any plans for a long-term partnership with VUDU, nor does it have any plans to incorporate the technology into its TVs.

Steals and deals: Get a Playstation 3 for $100

PlayStation-3.jpgRight off the bat, looking at that title, you should know there will be some sort of catch. And there is...but it's not that bad. Here's how you can net yourself a brand new Playstation 3 for $100:

Step 1: Sign up for Sony's new Playstation Visa Card--it comes with no annual fees and is an instant approval application process (US citizens only though)

Step 2: Order an 80 GB Playstation 3 from SonyStyle.com (yes you have to pay the $399.99 upfront)

Step 3: Wait 8 to 12 weeks for Sony to send you a $100 credit (effective price now $299.99)

Step 4: While you're waiting (within 12 weeks of your application), charge $1500 to your new Sony Visa and Sony will issue you another $100 credit (effective price now $199.99)

Step 5: Charge another $1500 to your Visa before the 6-month ownership mark and Sony will grant you another $100 credit (effective price now sits at $99.99)

There you go--a $100 PS3!

Insignia NS-2BRDVD Blu-ray player $129.99 shipped

Insignia_Blu-ray_player.jpgPaying $129.99 for a Blu-ray player is an acceptable proposition. It's the type of price point needed for mainstream Blu-ray adoption. Best Buy is currently selling the Insignia NS-2BRDVD Blu-ray player for $129.99 shipped, meaning you can order it online and have it delivered to you. Sure, it's not a Profile 2.0 player (it's Profile 1.1) and it doesn't stream Netflix movies or anything. But for a penny under $130 it does feature 1080p output and upconversion, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD audio, and a one year warranty. You'll be on your own for the HDMI cables as well but they don't cost too much if you look around.

Blockbuster has unlimited rentals for $10

blockbuster-sb.jpgBlockbuster may not be rolling in the dough, but keeping customers in mind the video retailer keeps rolling out the deals. Today it announced the Summer Escape Pass, giving customers unlimited weekly movie and video game rentals for only $10. The catch is that there can only be one rental at a time, so you'll have to make a few trips to get your money's worth. This is a limited summer time promotion, but until the leaves fall you can purchase a new pass each week.

Sony cuts Playstation 2 (not PS3) price to $99

ps2-pricedrop.jpgSony has announced it'll be dropping the price of a Playstation 2 to $99.99 starting April 1. That should definitely get the PS3 predecessor flying off shelves everywhere. Compared to the PS3's $400 price tag, buying a PS2 now is likely buying a 2 x 4 instead of a new house. In today's economy at least. Unfortunately for those that were hoping for a PS3 price cut, an official statement from Al De Leon, PR Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, confirms such thinking is nothing more than a pipedream. "As we have stated previously, we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation," De Leon said. "SCEA remains focused on the long-term momentum of PS3. With the industry's best software lineup this year, combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date, we remain confident in our approach and the value we're delivering with PS3."

Okay, but the only problem with Sony's strategy here is that for the next few quarters, the PS2 and not the PS3 will be the world's number one selling game console.

Steals and deals: 52-inch Vizio LCD HDTV for under $1000

Vizio_52-inch_270x269.jpgNow this is a deal! CompUSA is selling the 52-inch Vizio VX52LF for only $999.99! It is refurbished and only has a 90 day warranty, but in a time of economic despair, why not take the chance and save $1000. The VX52LF is a 1080p set with a trio of HDMI slot, a pair of component inputs, and a universal remote. Not bad!
